Introduction

India Space Academy is an academic institution under the Department of Space Education of India Space Week. India Space Week is an autonomous body with support from central and state governments. The role of India Space Week is to promote space education and employment among the students, teachers, and research scholars of schools, colleges, universities, and institutions. The academy develops workshops that spread awareness about the current requirements of the space industry. Also, it develops various programs to equip the students with the right information, skills, practical exposure, research exposure, and training to make them future-ready. The Remote Sensing & GIS Applications in Forest Fire Workshop is a two-hour online program designed for students, researchers, and forest professionals. It combines theoretical foundations, GIS techniques, software demonstrations, and hands-on practice with Google Earth Engine (GEE) to build practical skills in forest fire monitoring and analysis

What You Will Learn:
  • Introduction to RS in Forest Fire Management: Principles of EMR, sensor types, resolutions, and datasets (MODIS, VIIRS, Sentinel-2, Landsat).
  • GIS Techniques: Spatial analysis (kernel density, hotspot analysis, buffer, overlay), risk mapping through weighted overlays.
  • Software Demonstration: Fire data visualization, burn severity classification, hotspot mapping in QGIS.
  • Hands-on GEE: Fire detection, burned area mapping, severity classification, fire frequency analysis, and GIS integration.
  • Practical Exercises: Creating fire hotspot maps and burn severity maps using real datasets.

Who Can Attend:
  • Students – especially those in STEM, environmental science, forestry, geography, or remote sensing/GIS programs.
  • Researchers – working on topics related to forest ecology, fire management, climate change, or geospatial analysis.
  • Forest professionals & practitioners – including staff from forest departments, NGOs, disaster management agencies, and environmental organizations.
  • Citizen scientists & enthusiasts – anyone motivated to learn practical applications of satellite data and GIS for forest fire studies.

Key Highlights:
  • Interactive sessions with simplified explanations
  • Real-world examples and case studies
  • Insight into Remote Sensing and GIS for Forest Fire.
  • Pathways for students to pursue careers in Remote Sensing and GIS.
