Introduction

India Space Academy is an academic institution operating under the Department of Space Education of India Space Week. India Space Week is an autonomous body supported by both central and state governments, with a mission to promote space education and employment among students, teachers, and research scholars across schools, colleges, universities, and institutions. The Academy designs and delivers workshops aligned with current industry requirements and develops programs that provide students with essential knowledge, practical skills, research exposure, and professional training to prepare them for future opportunities.

The Hands-On Heat Wave Analysis Using Satellite Data and Google Earth Engine is a two-hour online training program designed for students, researchers, faculty members, and professionals. The workshop integrates theoretical concepts, live software demonstrations, and hands-on practice using Google Earth Engine (GEE). Participants will learn the fundamentals of heat wave analysis using satellite datasets, understand key heat wave indicators, perform Land Surface Temperature (LST), NDVI, and NDBI analysis, identify heat hotspots, generate area statistics, and export results using a real India-based case study.

What You Will Learn:
  • Introduction to Heat Waves and their causes.
  • Difference between Air Temperature and Land Surface Temperature (LST).
  • Role of Remote Sensing in Heat Wave Analysis.
  • Understanding key satellite datasets including MODIS LST, Sentinel-2, and Landsat.
  • Understanding heat wave indicators including LST, NDVI, and NDBI.
  • Introduction to Google Earth Engine (GEE) and its interface.
  • Downloading and uploading study area shapefiles in GEE.
  • Calculating Land Surface Temperature (LST), NDVI, and NDBI.
  • Heat Wave Hotspot Mapping and hotspot extraction.
  • Generating monthly/yearly LST charts and area statistics.
  • Exporting GeoTIFF outputs and charts.
